Become a Mentor

What’s involved when registering as a volunteer mentor?
Volunteer Mentors are integral to the success of each CoderDojo session. All it takes is a few hours of your time over a few Saturdays. If you’re bringing your child anyway, it’s even easier. Mentors should ideally possess:

  • The willingness to create and deliver content passionately and interactively
  • A desire to encourage kids to take an interest in coding
  • An ability to think on your feet – kids can ask some very interesting and challenging questions.

Anyone can be a mentor. You don’t need to be an expert in coding – all you need is a passion for helping kids learn. If you have an interest in coding, technology and programming, that’s a bonus!

The mentors’ role is to:

  • Guide and assist participants
  • Let us know of any suitable and interesting guest speakers
  • Provide feedback and input into format and content
  • Spread the word to encourage others to become volunteer mentors.

Our Aim

Our aim is to offer a free, safe interesting and welcoming environment for children and adults to learn to code

Pi Cymru

PiCymru aims to inspire people into computing and bring those beginning their journey together with experienced hobbyists and professionals who are using the Raspberry Pi to do great things. We organise meet up events called Jams to get the local community together to talk about their projects and experiences and demonstrate their work.

Carmarthen Journal Story

THE use of technology in schools is common place but changes are under way that will see how children learn about computing turned inside out claims a new Carmarthen club. Youngsters aged between 7 and 16 have attended the first session of the Carmarthen Coder Dojo club. Put simply, it is a club dedicated to teaching children the building blocks of computing and how to make their own computer programmes. The skills that may once have been dubbed “geeky” are set to play an ever increasing role in children’s education as coding becomes part of the curriculum from September in England..

A LITTLE ABOUT CODER DOJO

What is a Dojo?

A Dojo is an independent and casual club where young people aged 7-17 (Ninjas) get together to learn, have fun, and make projects using computers. Dojos are free to attend, and are run by volunteers or staff at universities, schools, libraries, community centres and more. A Dojo is more of a club than a class, and Ninjas can expect to have some free-time at a Dojo which they can use to work on their own projects. All Dojos are part of an open source international movement called CoderDojo, founded in Ireland in 2011.

What happens at a Dojo?

A Dojo can simply be a gathering of young people studying and working on their own code-related projects together. If they wish, the organisers of each Dojo can plan some additional activities for the Ninjas. This could include sharing some basics of computer science, taking part in social activities, joining hands-on demonstrations of technology, learning how to use some programming languages and gaining experience in developing websites, apps, programs, games and more. Remember that unstructured time at a Dojo is important for Ninjas - because they can use this time to discover coding at their own pace. Ninjas can get some assistance with their projects from Mentors and meet like-minded people. This makes learning to code a fun and sociable experience.
